Swinsty Reservoir Summer Adventures

Yorkshire Water Summer Adventures

I’m very excited to announce The Fern Club will be working in collaboration with Yorkshire Water this summer. We’re blessed with a huge expanse of beautiful countryside around Harrogate and this summer we’re heading outside to explore it more.

Yorkshire Water have kindly allowed The Fern Club access to Swinsty Reservoir this summer; a chance for families to come together in a safe space. These outdoor sessions will be a mixture of The Fern Club life skills and outdoor adventure trail hikes (or for the little ones, a play and explore!)

We’ll move slowly to allow even the littlest of legs to keep up and get the most from the beautiful woodland, reservoir and community.  Each session will follow a similar format, skills and activities in our base followed by exploring the area. We’ll be led by the children; their energy, interests and give them space to make nature observations as they go.

Yorkshire Water manage the reservoir and surrounding woodlands for the safety and enjoyment of recreational visitors. Swinsty is one of a number of reservoirs they have done a lot of work to improve accessibility; to enable more people including wheelchair and pushchair users to enjoy the countryside – they’ve also recently made further improvements to the permissive footpath. Just a few days before my son was born we walked (albeit very slowly) a short way around the reservoir as a family. Grandpa Fern whizzing ahead of us in his wheelchair!

Yorkshire Water also carry out woodland management in the wider area to improve habitats for wildlife, biodiversity and long term resilience.
